EU foreign ministers have agreed to impose sanctions on Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
According to EU High Representative Joseph Borrell, the EU is launching for the first time the EU’s global human rights mechanism, under which sanctions will be imposed on specific individuals.
Sanctions against Russia are expected to be approved within a week.
«The ministers unanimously assessed Russia’s recent actions and Moscow’s reactions as a clear signal that Russia is not interested in cooperating with the EU and is even more eager for a confrontation,» said Borrell.
According to reports, the target of the sanctions may be the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, the commander of the Russian National Guard, and the Prosecutor General.
